With the sunny weather and driving our year-old Mini with a factory-installed sunroof that works perfectly and is silent and quiet, I felt the need to share our experience with Dales and Webasto here. Not to bash Dales, but to warn consumers when buying Webasto products. In 2020, we bought our first new Mini Clubman from Broekhuis in Enschede. A fully equipped promotional model, but unfortunately, no sunroof. At our request, Broekhuis commissioned Webasto Doetinchem to install a parking heater and electric sliding sunroof in the new Mini. Upon delivery, we immediately drove back to Broekhuis because the roof was vibrating like crazy, and while driving, we developed a thumping sound in our ears. A Dales mechanic came to our home to inspect it and, to our surprise, brought several sheets of English-language paper explaining how these so-called thumping eardrums can occur when installing sunroofs in cars. We, as consumers, should have known, according to the rather pedantic mechanic. The Mini went back to Dales for a day, but they couldn't eliminate the vibration; after a day of driving, the vibration was back in full force. Back to Broekhuis, because they were Dales' client. And there we were asked to file a complaint with Webasto itself. We did, and after a few weeks, a harsh and rude response from Webasto: "We're not going to do anything about this!" That was enough for Broekhuis and us. Legally, Broekhuis was responsible, but Broekhuis didn't want a conflict with Webasto, and certainly not with us as customers. The solution, after a year, was a new Mini (with a surcharge equal to a reasonable depreciation) with a factory-installed electric sliding roof. And in this second spring, we're still glad there are roofs without those thumping eardrums and without a vibrating pane of glass. If you search for "Mini Clubman Webasto" on YouTube, you'll see a video where we still think Webasto and Dales took things far too easy. Dales is undoubtedly a reputable and respectable company, and we feel no need to add anything negative here, but this is where things really went wrong... And let this be a warning if you're considering buying one of those shoddy Webasto roofs if your new car doesn't have a sunroof.
